Day 69: “Sailing” – Rod Stewart

!!!ITALIANO!!!

Today’s song is a cult song, it may be considered as a hymn. It was written by Gavin Sutherland in 1972 and recorded with his brother Iain with whom he formed the Sutherland Brothers . In 1975, in his album Atlantic Crossing , Rod Stewart proposed his own version, which was a nr 1 hit for 4 weeks and remains the most successful one in his Country for the British rocker. The track was used in many TV programmes in several Countries, this making its success bigger.

It is hard not to be enraptured by Stewart’s voice, so expressive, “soul”. Its melody is so touching and personally, I have to say this is one of those songs which come back from time to time, going on in my head for days.

Lyrics

I am sailing, I am sailing,
home again ‘cross the sea.
I am sailing, stormy waters,
to be near you, to be free.

I am flying, I am flying,
like a bird ‘cross the sky.
I am flying, passing high clouds,
to be with you, to be free.

Can you hear me, can you hear me
thro’ the dark night, far away,
I am dying, forever trying,
to be with you, who can say.

Can you hear me, can you hear me,
thro’ the dark night far away.
I am dying, forever trying,
to be with you, who can say.

We are sailing, we are sailing,
home again ‘cross the sea.
We are sailing stormy waters,
to be near you, to be free.

Oh Lord, to be near you, to be free.
Oh Lord, to be near you, to be free,
Oh Lord.
